Discovery Fund
The Discovery Fund, established by the University of Maryland, is an early-stage investment fund aimed at fostering the growth of technology companies in Prince George's County, Maryland. With an annual budget of up to $1 million, the fund provides support to innovative startups in various fields such as quantum technologies, cybersecurity, data analytics, and biomedical devices. It offers both dilutive capital (like equity and convertible debt) and non-dilutive capital (grants). To be eligible, companies must be growth-focused startups located or willing to relocate to Prince George's County and demonstrate potential for market returns and regional economic benefits.
Investment Partners
Key partners include the Maryland Department of Commerce, which offers programs such as venture capital investments, tax credits, direct loans, and grants to drive innovation, attract companies to Maryland, and create jobs. The Global Gateway Soft Landing Program supports international businesses entering the U.S. market by offering affordable access to facilities, advisors, and funding for market entry costs. Additionally, the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs enable domestic small businesses to engage in federally supported research and development, with a focus on commercialization potential. Together, these partners contribute to fostering innovation and economic growth in the region.
Quantum Investment Summit
The Quantum Investment Summit, hosted by the Quantum Startup Foundry at the University of Maryland, brought together 20+ of the most innovative early-stage companies from the thriving quantum ecosystem, which includes over 650 startups globally. Held on October 12-13, 2021, in College Park, Maryland, just minutes from Washington, D.C., the event featured a keynote presentation on the State of the Global Quantum Ecosystem, as well as presentations from eight promising quantum companies. Attendees had exclusive opportunities to engage with quantum innovators and peer investors through one-on-one meetings, topic-focused roundtables, and networking dinners, fostering meaningful connections within the quantum industry.
